ABSTRACT

The study examined the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) facilities for the administration of universities in Rivers State. It aimed at determining the availability, utilization and maintenance and challenges of ICT facilities for management of universities in Rivers State, Nigeria.Four research questions were stated, and four corresponding null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population for this study consisted of26 deans and 151 Heads of Department, 3 Bursars, 3 Librarians and 3 Directors of Works ofall the three (3) Universities in Rivers State; bringing the population to a total of 185 and 100% of the population was adopted as the sample size as it was small. The study used the stratified random sampling technique. The instrument employed for data collection was a questionnaire which was validated by the supervisor and other experts in the Faculty of Education especially Department of Educational Management. The test-retest method was used to test the reliability of the instrument with a coefficient of 0.88. Data were analysed using mean and standard deviation for the research questions while the hypotheses were tested using Z-test. The study revealed that ICT facilities were highly available, utilized to a very high extent and maintained to a very high extent; and that poor power supply, inadequate funding, and lack of management commitment in monitoring the use of ICT facilities, were among the challenges bedeviling the use of ICT facilities in the management of universities. The following are a few of the recommendations from the study: Academic and non-academic staff should be trained to be competent in ICT usage; there should be increased funding for the entire educational sector with emphasis on ICT facilities; university administrators should ensure that ICT be integrated into all record-keeping functions of university management as well as ensure that digital databases are kept;ICTs gadgets should be regularly serviced and maintained with powerful antivirus installed.
