ABSTRACT

This study seeks to investigate the knowledge and attitude of undergraduate’s students towards homosexuality and its implication on their academic performance. Dislike of homosexuals is prevalent in university settings when the social context of the institution is patriarchal in nature. Negative attitudes and hostility towards homosexuality have often been part of the culture of many religious traditions, for instance, some forms of Christianity and Islam. Traditional beliefs along with homophobic stereotypes have resulted in disturbing experiences for lesbian and gay youth in Nigeria. Thusfor the purpose of this study, four objectives of study were drawn to guide the study. Relevant literatures and concepts relating to the study were reviewed. To achieve the objectives, the paper uses ex-post facto survey design to explore opinions on “the knowledge and attitude of undergraduate’s students towards homosexuality and its implication on their academic performance”. The study applied ex-post-facto survey research design. Random sampling was used to select three tertiary   institutions in Rivers state. The sources of data were secondary and primary data. The primary source of Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument titled “the knowledge and attitude of undergraduate’s students towards homosexuality and its implication on their academic performance”. Data collected were statistically treated using simple percentages and mean score statistics. Findings from the study revealed that Schools and other educational contexts are often the first sites of victimisation for homosexual youth and that Students face challenges as a result of longstanding prejudice and discrimination. Homosexual students are at a greater risk for victimisation and harassment and are thus more likely to suffer emotional and behavioural symptoms, and mores that harassment and intimidation encountered by homosexuals in school setting creates an environment that is unsafe and unsupportive of academic and social achievement. The study recommends that Workshops should be offered to both staff and students so that they can learn more about differing sexuality. Based on the findings necessary conclusions were drawn and suggestions for furthers studies made.
