INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

 

An important task of primary schools is to teach pupils to read. Hence, the basic objective of primary education as reflected in the Nigerian Policy on Education is “inculcation of permanent literacy and ability to communicate effectively” (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2011). Reading is not just an important tool for learning but it is the basis for all aspects of learning (Oyetunde, 2017). It is very difficult to achieve academic success without being able to read. Consequently, pupils need to learn to read in order to achieve academic excellence. This highlights the close relationship between reading ability and academic achievement as well as the critical role of reading as a tool for the pupil’s successful living and functioning in today’s complex society.
