ABSTRACT
This study is an evaluation of Social Media addiction among female students of Rivers State University, Port Harcourt. The objectives, among others, were to find out whether the phenomena of addiction exists among females students of Rivers State University as a result of social media usage,and to highlight the level of social media addiction among them, as well as to find out the social media platforms students subscribed to. In other to give focus to the study, the researcher adopted the survey method with questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire was structured to elicit response based on the research question and it was patterned after the original Internet Addiction Test. The questions were both open and closed ended, allowing for definite and in-depth responses. The findings of this study, was based on 300 respondents drawn from the population size. The findings revealed that social media platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp are mostly used by the students and that the phenomena of addiction does exist among students with some scoring mildly, moderately, with only 2% being severely addicted. Given the addictive nature of social media, the researcher recommends that the institution engage students in compulsory extra-curriculum activities in other to reduce online time. The researchers also recommends that a population bigger than 300 should be studied for a more heterogeneous representation.
