1.2 Statement of the problem
The power sector in Nigeria through the years have been a tortuous, difficult, painful, devastating and herculean task for both the governments and the populace. A population of about 170 million people with more than half of them living without electric power supply, certainly presents a catastrophic situation for economic and social development of the nation and the people.Adequate power supply is an unavoidable prerequisite to any nation’s development, and electricity generation, transmission and distribution are capital-intensive activities requiring huge resources of both funds and capacity. In the prevailing circumstances in Nigeria where funds availability is progressively dwindling, creative and innovative solutions are necessary top address the power supply problem. Nigeria has an estimated 176 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, giving the country one of the top ten natural gas endowments in the world and the largest endowment in Africa.
Low optimization found in most electricity industries in developing countries like Nigeria and the adverse effects on the overall performance of the organization ranging from production loss to high production cost. Optimization is very important in order to ensure constant electricity supply andoptimal efficiency of electricity. Unfortunately, the Nigerian power industry for decades has been characterized by frequent power interruptions, low customer voltages, constant machine breakdowns, etc. This has negatively influenced production costs in industry. An efficient optimization model will minimize these problems. Hence, this necessitates the need to investigate the optimization of power supply in a gas plant. The optimization of the power plants and transmission lines in the electricity industry is crucial for meeting demand. Consequently, timely optimization plays a major role reducing breakdowns and avoiding expensive production shutdowns.
1.3 Aims and objectives
The main aim of this work is to investigate optimization of power Generation in, Nigeria.
Its specific objectives are:
1. To evaluate the various challenges faced by the electricity sector in the generation of electricity in Nigeria.
2. To ascertain the ways to improve on power generation in Nigeria
3. To investigate the various renewable energy potential available for sustainable energy generation in Nigeria.
4. To facilitate feasibility and optimization studies during the design phase for an energy system, as well as process improvement studies for power generation
5. To make useful recommendations as regards decision-making procedures concerning plant operation and maintenance and allocation of research funds.
