1.2 Statement of the Problem

Long before the colonialism in Nigeria, women has played active role in citing community projects. We had such programmes as: Better Life for Rural Women, Affirmative Action for Women, etc, all geared towards addressing women issues on areas of liberation and empowerment in the society. Despite the huge impacts women had made in community development, little or nothing has been said about their contributions. The socio-economic problems in Ikwerre L.G.A have encouraged different groups to evolve strategies which enable them to uplift their standards of living and promote their social functioning. In an attempt to address the problems of development in their community Ikwerre women in particular engage in activities that had stimulated execution of projects that are laudable. Traditional, there is a perception that community development was a male activity. Nevertheless, there exists a preponderance of women in development in Ikwerre L.G.A of Rivers State.

The rural communities of Igwuruta, Omagwa, Umuanwa, Ozuaha, Ubima, Aluu, Umudioga, Egbeda, etc in Ikwerre L.G.A, have a combined population composed mostly of women, who due to various reasons involve themselves in development activities. It is against this background that this study assesses women involvement in community development projects in selected communities in this study, as to exposing their level of participation; unveil the motivating factors for their involvement despite perceptions of male dominance and what limit their role in the development field. However, It is clearly evidence the foregoing that both genders are both forces in development issues, though most effort of the womenfolk are not accorded due recognition.
