ABSTRACT
This study investigated the problems associated with solid waste disposal among residents of Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers state. A sample of 480 residents (male, 280, female, 200) was used for the study. For the purpose of this study, five research questions were drawn to guide the study. Relevant literatures and concepts relating to the study were reviewed. To achieve the objectives, the paper uses ex-post facto survey design to explore opinions on “the problems associated with solid waste disposal among residents of port Harcourt metropolis”. The study applied ex-post-facto survey research design. Random sampling was used to select eight districts in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers state. The sources of data were secondary and primary data. The primary source of Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument titled “the problems associated with solid waste disposal among residents” (TPASWDRP).The questionnaires were distributed to sample population of 480 respondents. Data collected were statistically treated using simple percentages and mean score statistics. The six hypothesis formulated for the study were tested using Z-test at 0.05 % significance level. Findings from the study revealed that lack of funding,poor road network,level of education, insufficient dumping site, lack of implementation of government policies, and indiscriminate waste disposal are the major problems associated with solid waste disposal among residents of Port Harcourt metropolis, rivers state.The study recommends that in solving the problems associated with solid waste disposal, there is need to address the public on the effect of indiscriminate dumping of waste in their environment and that Government (both Federal and States) should always give adequate punishment to any citizen involve in indiscriminate dumping of waste. Based on the findings necessary conclusions were drawn and suggestions for furthers studies made.
