Abstract

This study was carried out by the researcher because teaching in Rivers State is practiced by both qualified and unqualified teachers such as some NYSC members. This is unlike what obtains in other professions. Hence, the researcher carried out this research to find out the level of utilization, the in-service training programmes available, the supervision mechanisms, the contributions of NYSC members and the challenges of utilization of NYSC members as teachers in public and private secondary schools in Rivers State. The population of this study comprises of all public senior secondary schools, public junior secondary schools and private schools in Rivers State, and they are 824 The sample size is 330. This is 40% of the total population. The sampling technique was a simple random sampling technique and the respondents were the principals of these schools. Five research questions and five null hypotheses were posed to guide the study. The instrument of data collection was a questionnaire titled utilization of NYSC members as teachers in public and private secondary schools in Rivers State questionnaire (UONYSCMATIPAPSSIRSQ). Test-retest was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument and Pearson product moments reliability coefficient was used to derive a reliability coefficient of 0.90. The data collected were analyzed using mean scores, standard deviation and rank order with a criterion mean of 2.50, while z-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significant level. The findings of the study among others ar that; NYSC members are always assigned class sizes they can teach. The in-service training programmes available for NYSC members are; development enhancement materials, modeling,  etc. The supervision mechanisms available for NYSC members are; clinical, demonstration, etc. While the contributions of NYSC members as teachers are that; they increase the number of teachers in schools in the rural areas etc. Lack of commitment, insecurity, etc, are the challenges of utilization of NYSC members as teachers in public and private secondary schools. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that public and private schools utilization of NYSC members as teachers is inadequate therefore, the researcher recommends that; NYSC directorate should post corps members to schools based on available vacancies and need of the schools, school administrators should ensure that short term courses, induction, etc are utilized. Principals of schools should encourage inter-school visitations by NYSC members.  The government and owners of private schools should guarantee the security of lives and property of NYSC members.
