1.2      Statement of the problem

Apart from the high set up cost of using individual stand-alone shelling, separation, milling and oil extraction machines for melon processing, discharging and reloading of processing materials amongst these machines as observed in the existing melon seed processing technologies is tedious and unhygienic. In order to reduce the set up cost, drudgery, losses due to melon kernel breakage as well as improve hygiene in melon seed processing, an integrated machine with output options for melon kernel, melon flour and melon oil will be  developed to encourage just in time production in the sector.

Design can be described as a decision-making process where plans are formulated for the physical development of a machine or piece of equipment, whereby all the user’s requirements are satisfied. The work reported here presents design of a melon oil extracting machine. It is aimed at designing an extractor for use by the populace. Many machines have been designed to carry out this function, however. This extracting machine is one of such to extract oil from water melon fruit Nat relatively lower cost, less power consumption and whose materials can be afforded by the populace. Suggestion will be offered on the mode of operation of the plant, extraction condition of the oil and its quality as well as the procedure which if adopted and applied will go a long way to obtaining maximum yield of the oil and the economic benefit.

 

 

1.3 Aim and objectives of study

The main objective of this research is   to make a portable device that would enable the extraction of oil from melon. The two specific objectives of the project were as follows:

1. To present an economical means of extracting oil

2. To design a  melon oil extracting   machine that does not pose health risk to the user and is environment friendly

3. To design a melon oil extracting machine that would be simple and easy to operate

4. To design a melon oil machine that will be safe and easy to maintain
