Abstract

This study was set out to assess the attitude of residents of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State to waste management. Further investigation was done targeted at identifying the waste disposal method practiced by the residents of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, their attitude of the people to waste management, their knowledge of waste management, amount of waste generated by each household in the area and  the contribution of  community leadership to waste management in the area. Two hypotheses were set up for this study. The study adopted the cross sectional survey research design and made use of 400 respondents as the sample population for the study which was derived using the Taro Yamane formula for sample size determination. The study showed that food waste was the most prevalent waste generated in the area and that the people’s attitude to waste management influenced the waste disposal method they adopted. It further showed that the people are willing to pay for waste management services if provided also the leadership structures in the area supports waste management projects and programme. Statistically the study showed a statistically significant influence of people’s attitude to waste management on the waste disposal method practiced in the area and also a statistically significant influence of people’s knowledge of waste management on the amount of household waste generated in the area Conclusively, the study recommended that Government and community leadership needs to support and continually enforce waste management projects and environmentally friendly approaches to help build a safe and clean community.
