ASSESSING THE VIABILITY OF WIND POWER IN BONNY ISLAND OF RIVERS STATE OF SOUTHERN NIGERIA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
ABSTRACT
Electricity production and distribution is very important for developing countries especially Nigeria, where power supply is grossly inadequate and epileptic. Wind energy production is quite often unstable, as such proper modelling and cost analysis is necessary to evaluate its viability before employing it as standalone or integration to national grids. This paper presents the viability of wind energy in Bonny Island, of Southern Nigeria, in order to determine the suitability of installing wind turbines or siting wind farms for power generation. In Bonny kingdom, studies about electric power generation and distribution is critical as the town is isolated from Nigerian national grid. In this work, recorded data of wind speed and direction in Bonny Island for two years was collected and used to predict the dynamic behaviour of wind energy in the area. Wind rose diagrams were developed for Bonny Island to show the intensity and direction of wind speed based on the data obtained for the period of study. Thus, this study would help the government, stake holders and energy planners to determine the necessary wind data of target areas based on the presented wind rose diagrams to estimate a suitable location for installing wind turbines for power generation.
