THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OBIO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF RIVERS STATE

 

ABSTRACT

This study seeks to investigate the use of information technology in teaching English language in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state . Schools that report the highest levels of student ICT-related skills and experience are often not those with heavy computer course requirements, but rather ones that made use of ICTs on a routine basis throughout the teacher professional development and the teaching and learning process For the purpose of this study, four objectives of study were drawn to guide the study. Relevant literatures and concepts relating to the study were reviewed. To achieve the objectives, the paper uses ex-post facto survey design to explore opinions on “the use of information technology in teaching English language in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state”. The study applied ex-post-facto survey research design. Random sampling was used to select five secondary schools in Obio/AKpor local government. The sources of data were secondary and primary data. The primary source of Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument titled “the use of information technology in teaching English language in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state”. Data collected were statistically treated using simple percentages and mean score statistics. Findings from the study revealed that some of the factors that affect the use of ICT in teaching and learning include: teacher motivation and commitment to their students’ learning and to their own development as teachers support from the schools and access to sufficient quantities of technology. The study recommends that the government should endeavor to finance the introduction of ICT into teaching and learning in all secondary schools in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state as it will enhance the academic performance of the students. Based on the findings necessary conclusions were drawn and suggestions for furthers studies made.
