Abstract Preview
Having a faulty production process must always produce faulty products. The desire of every organisation is to make profit and produce quality products. This study examined the evaluation of statistical process control(SPC) in some Port Harourt based bottled water production plants. The objectives of the research were to investigate the level of awareness of SPC, to ascertain the importance and realized benefits of SPC and lastly to evaluate the quality of some selected bottled water products. Data from a sample size of 15 was collected using a questionnaire as data collection instrument. Data analysis was done quantitatively using Excel. Also in determining the impact of SPC on the quality of final bottled water products, qualitative analysis done revealed a few products from sampled plants had faulty pH of 6 and TDS of 1120mg/l which were not palatable compared to given quality standards by WHO. Most of the faulty products belonged to plants unaware of SPC as a very reliable quality control technique and also to plants with poor understanding of SPC. Production plants revealed the use of SPC contributed to increase in savings and customer satisfaction. SPC was shown to have a distinct advantage over other quality method such as inspection of end product. One of the major challenges revealed in the implementaion of SPC was resistance to change. The need to get top management to buy in into SPC implementation, and encourage training of workshop floor operators about its merits and benefits was recommended.
