ABSTRACT

The study assessed the strategies of accidents reduction among workers in Romek Company Limited, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. One hundred and fifty four copies of questionnaire were distributed randomly among the staff both at the base and field. Descriptive statistics in form of simple percentages were used for analysis while inferential statistics using chi square was used to test the hypotheses. Findings showed that more than 70% of respondents agreed that repairs/replacement and daily maintenance of equipment were safety attitudes towards defective machines. More than 40% agreed to human errors as a factor responsible for accidents in the workplace. Significant difference existed in the factors causing accidents in Romek Company (X2= 11.362; p=O.O1 0). Furthermore, 34% agreed to formulation of internal health and safety policies and 27% agreed to periodic accident inspections and monitoring as dominating ways of compliance with health and safety laws in Romek Company. The major management measure to ensure workers’ compliance with safety laws was safety awards to workers. Majority (35%) agreed that permanent disability was the effect of accident on the employee while 27% agreed to high cost of production as the effect of accident on the employer. However, measures to prevent accidents in workplace included proper handling of hazardous chemicals and periodic medical examination. The study recommended among others that health and safety education should always be given to all, ranging from management to site workers to have more knowledge about the job safety.
