ABSTRACT
The study set out to unveil hospital waste management and its associated risk amongst public health institutions in Port Harcourt. In the light of this, set out five research objectives and associated questions with two research hypotheses as guide to the study, it also made use of the cross sectional survey research design. The population for the study was 90 persons who A persons were purposively sampled from three public hospitals using the stratified sampling technique. A well structured questionnaire was used in the collection of data for the study. The study found out the following; that waste in the hospitals are generated often, Liquids, sharps and human based waste are the predominant waste generated in the hospitals, it also found out that the major waste disposal method was the use of waste contractors and that hospital waste has a high risk. Statistically the study revealed that the study revealed that there is no impact of personnel training on hospital waste management and also that there are health risks associated with Hospital waste management system. Therefore the study recommended that there is need to expose the workforce to more trainings that have true bearing on waste management as to enhance their knowledge of waste management making them fit in the job they do and that Government needs to enshrine a law set up a check system for hospital waste management system as the use of waste contractors as revealed is unsuitable for hospital waste management
