ABSTRACT

This study investigated principals’ delegation of authority strategies and secondary school administrative effectiveness in Rivers State. Six research questions and six hypotheses were used for the study. The correlational research design was used for this study. The population of the study consisted of all the 248 public secondary schools in Rivers State. The total population of respondents included the two hundred and forty eight (248) principals administering the affairs of these public secondary schools in Rivers State. The sample size of this study comprised of one hundred and forty nine (149) principals, representing 60% of the population were used as study participants. The stratified sampling technique was used for the study. The first instrument titled: Principals’ Delegation of Authority Strategies in Public Secondary Schools Questionnaire (PDASPSSQ), and the second instrument titled: Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (AEQ) were used for the study. The questionnaire were divided into three sections:  section A was for collection of demographic data. While section B contained 31 items on principals’ delegation of authority strategies in public secondary schools and section C contained 10 items on administrative effectiveness.  Furthermore, the various coefficients obtained were all above the accepted co-efficient of 0.60 and therefore guaranteed the use of the instrument for the study. Data gathered from this exercise were collated and statistically analyzed.  The statistic used for answering the research questions was Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics, while the null hypotheses were tested using z-ratio statistics at 0.05 Alpha level of significance.The findings of this work revealed that there is a significant relationship between principals’ consideration of the ‘Expertise’ principle, ‘Location’ principle, ‘Position’ principle in delegation of authority strategies and administrative effectiveness in public secondary schools in Rivers State. It was recommended that school’s Principals should create an appealing atmosphere that allows teachers to engage in decision making process of the school so that they could be of assistance to the administrator in running the school activity smartly in line with their terms and conditions of work.
